Car Rental in Dubai and the UAE: Everything You Need to Know
Car Rental in Dubai and the UAE: Everything You Need to Know
The UAE is one of the easiest countries in the Middle East to drive in. Modern motorways, excellent signage, cheap fuel, and a car culture that makes having your own wheels almost essential outside the Dubai Metro zone. Whether you want to explore Abu Dhabi's Saadiyat Island, drive through the Hajar Mountains to Fujairah, or just navigate Dubai's sprawling suburbs, a rental car gives you freedom that taxis and ride-hailing cannot match.
Driving Licence Requirements
The rules depend on your nationality:
Visitors from GCC Countries
- A valid GCC driving licence is accepted without any additional requirements
Visitors from Selected Countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, etc.)
- Your home country licence is accepted for up to 6 months
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) is officially recommended but not always required
- Rental companies may ask for an IDP β bring one to be safe
Visitors from Other Countries
- An International Driving Permit is required alongside your home licence
- Some nationalities need a temporary UAE driving licence (available through rental companies for an additional fee)
The Salik Toll System
Dubai's toll system is fully electronic β no toll booths, no cash. Cameras photograph your licence plate as you pass under a Salik gate, and the toll is charged automatically.
- Cost: AED 4 (approximately EUR 1) per gate crossing
- Toll gates: Currently 8 gates across Dubai, including key locations on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Maktoum Bridge, and Business Bay Crossing
- Rental cars: Most rental companies register their cars with Salik. Tolls are charged to your credit card at the end of the rental, sometimes with an administration fee of AED 10-25
Tip: You cannot avoid Salik gates on most Dubai routes without significant detours. Budget AED 20-40/day for tolls if driving across Dubai regularly.
Speed Cameras and Fines
The UAE has one of the most extensive speed camera networks in the world. They are not subtle β but the fines are expensive:
- Fixed cameras are on every major road, every few kilometres
- Mobile radar patrols operate on highways
- Speed tolerance: Most cameras activate at 21 km/h above the posted limit (e.g., a 120 km/h zone will trigger at 141 km/h). However, this tolerance is not guaranteed
- Fines: Starting from AED 300 (EUR 75) for minor speeding, up to AED 3,000 (EUR 750) for excessive speeding, plus potential vehicle impoundment
Important: Fines accumulated on a rental car are charged to your credit card with the rental company's processing fee.
Fuel Costs
Fuel in the UAE is some of the cheapest in the world:
- Special 95: AED 2.80-3.20/litre (EUR 0.70-0.80)
- Super 98: AED 2.90-3.30/litre (EUR 0.73-0.83)
- Diesel: AED 2.90-3.30/litre (EUR 0.73-0.83)
Fuel stations are plentiful and most offer full-service attendants who fill your tank. Tipping is customary (AED 5-10).
Desert Driving
If you plan to drive into the desert (for camping, dune bashing, or accessing remote areas):
- 4x4 is mandatory for off-road desert driving. A standard rental car will get stuck in sand immediately
- Most rental agreements prohibit off-road driving. Taking a standard rental car into the desert voids your insurance
- Specialised desert tour operators are a safer option for dune driving
- If driving on desert highways (e.g., to Al Ain or Liwa), a standard car is fine β these are paved roads
Insurance Requirements
UAE rental insurance typically includes:
- Comprehensive insurance (CDW equivalent) β Included in most rentals
- Third-party liability β Mandatory and included
- Personal accident insurance β Often included, varies by supplier
Excess amounts are typically AED 1,500-5,000 (EUR 375-1,250). Upgrading to zero-excess cover costs AED 30-80/day.
Note: Insurance is void if the driver is found to be negligent (e.g., texting while driving, running a red light, driving under the influence). UAE has zero tolerance for drink driving β even trace amounts of alcohol result in arrest and criminal charges.
Luxury Car Options
Dubai is the luxury car rental capital of the world. You can rent everything from a Lamborghini HuracΓ‘n to a Rolls-Royce Ghost:
- Luxury sedans (Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series): AED 800-1,500/day
- Sports cars (Porsche 911, Ferrari Portofino): AED 1,500-3,500/day
- Supercars (Lamborghini, McLaren): AED 3,000-7,000/day
- Luxury SUVs (Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga): AED 1,000-2,500/day
Deposits for luxury rentals are AED 5,000-30,000 on a credit card.
Parking in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Dubai
- RTA paid parking zones operate Saturday-Thursday, 8 AM-10 PM
- Rates: AED 2-4/hour depending on the zone
- Pay via: mParking app (SMS), parking meters, or Nol card
- Malls: Free parking for 3-4 hours, then AED 20-40/hour after
- Friday and public holidays: Free street parking
Abu Dhabi
- Mawaqif is the parking system
- Rates: AED 2-3/hour in premium zones

Summer Heat Precautions
UAE summer temperatures reach 45-50Β°C. Driving precautions:
- Never leave the car without running AC for more than a few minutes β the interior reaches dangerous temperatures within 10 minutes
- Check tyre pressure regularly. Heat causes tyre blowouts, especially on highways
- Keep water in the car at all times
- Windscreen sun shades are essential for any stop longer than 15 minutes
- Dark-coloured cars get significantly hotter. Choose white or silver if available
Essential Driving Tips for the UAE
- Keep your licence on you at all times β police can request it at checkpoints
- Do not use your phone while driving β AED 800 fine and 4 black points
- Give way to emergency vehicles by pulling over completely
- Flash of headlights from behind means "move over" β use the right lane when not overtaking
- Roundabouts β traffic already on the roundabout has priority
- U-turns are common and legal at designated U-turn points
- No drink driving β zero tolerance, criminal offense
