Exploring Portugal by Car: Lisbon to the Algarve

Portugal is one of Europe's most underrated road trip destinations. Compact enough to cross in a few hours, yet packed with enough variety to fill weeks of exploration. A drive from Lisbon to the Algarve takes you through the cobbled streets of Sintra, the cork forests of the Alentejo, and ends at some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

At just 280 km direct (or 400+ km with the detours you will want to make), this is a relaxed 5-7 day road trip that showcases the best of southern Portugal.

The Route: Lisbon to the Algarve

Day 1-2: Lisbon Area

Do not pick up your rental car immediately. Lisbon is best explored on foot, by tram, and by metro. The city's hills, narrow Alfama streets, and limited parking make driving a headache.

Pick up your car when you are ready to leave Lisbon β€” ideally from a city location rather than the airport (often cheaper).

Day 2-3: Sintra and Cascais Detour

Before heading south, drive 30 minutes west to Sintra β€” a fairy-tale town of colourful palaces set in misty mountains:

  • Pena Palace β€” A technicolour fantasy perched on a hilltop. Book tickets online and arrive early
  • Quinta da Regaleira β€” Gothic towers, underground tunnels, and the famous Initiation Well
  • Cabo da Roca β€” The westernmost point of continental Europe. Dramatic cliffs and Atlantic views

From Sintra, continue along the coast to Cascais β€” a charming beach town with excellent seafood restaurants.

Day 3-4: Through the Alentejo

Head south from Lisbon on the A2 motorway (tolled) or the free N2 national road. The Alentejo region is Portugal's agricultural heartland β€” vast plains of olive groves, cork oak forests, and golden wheat fields.

Must-see stops:

  • Γ‰vora β€” A UNESCO World Heritage city with a Roman temple, gothic cathedral, and the eerie Chapel of Bones
  • Monsaraz β€” A tiny medieval village perched on a hilltop overlooking the Alqueva reservoir (Europe's largest artificial lake)
  • Beja β€” An authentic Alentejo town with excellent local restaurants and zero tourist crowds

Day 5-7: The Algarve

The Algarve coast stretches 155 km from the dramatic cliffs of Lagos in the west to the Spanish border in the east. Each section has a different character:

Western Algarve (Sagres to Lagos):

  • Wild, rugged coastline with dramatic cliffs and hidden coves
  • Sagres is the southwestern tip of Europe β€” windswept and magnificent
  • Lagos has beautiful sea caves accessible by boat from Ponta da Piedade

Central Algarve (PortimΓ£o to Faro):

  • The classic Algarve β€” golden cliffs, warm seas, and well-developed tourist infrastructure
  • Praia da Marinha is consistently rated one of the best beaches in Europe
  • Albufeira is the tourist hub β€” lively nightlife, family beaches, and easy access to everything

Eastern Algarve (Faro to Vila Real):

  • Quieter, flatter, and more authentically Portuguese
  • Tavira is a beautiful riverside town with Roman ruins and quiet beaches
  • The Ria Formosa Natural Park is a lagoon system with islands accessible by ferry

Portugal's Toll System (Via Verde)

Portugal's toll system confuses many visitors. There are two types of tolled roads:

Traditional Toll Booths (Portagens)

Pay with cash or card at the booth. Found on major motorways like the A1 (Lisbon-Porto).

Electronic-Only Tolls (SCUT Roads)

No toll booths β€” cameras photograph your licence plate and charge electronically. This is where it gets complicated for tourists:

Options for paying electronic tolls:

  1. Via Verde transponder from rental company β€” EUR 1-3/day. The simplest option. All tolls are charged automatically
  2. EASYToll β€” Register your credit card at a machine upon arriving in Portugal (available at airports and border crossings). Tolls are charged to your card
  3. TOLLCard β€” Buy a prepaid card at a post office or service station

Our recommendation: Get the Via Verde transponder from your rental company. The daily fee is small and it eliminates all hassle.

Toll Costs: Lisbon to Algarve

  • A2 motorway (fast route): Approximately EUR 20-22
  • National roads (free alternative): EUR 0, but adds 1-2 hours
  • Within the Algarve (A22): EUR 5-8 depending on distance

Best Car for Portugal

Recommended: Compact car (Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, VW Polo)

  • Portuguese roads are generally excellent, but parking in old town centres is tight
  • Diesel saves significantly on a longer trip β€” Portuguese diesel is EUR 0.15-0.20/litre cheaper than petrol
  • Automatic transmission is increasingly available but still costs 25-35% more
  • Air conditioning is essential from May to October

Parking Tips

Lisbon

  • Street parking in the centre is nearly impossible. Use public car parks (EUR 15-25/day)
  • The LisbonParking app helps find available spots

Algarve Towns

  • Most Algarve towns have free or cheap parking on the outskirts
  • Central parking in Albufeira, Lagos, and Faro is paid (EUR 1-2/hour) and limited in summer
  • Beach car parks fill up by 11 AM in July-August. Arrive early or park further away

Sintra

  • Do not even try to park near the palaces. Use the park-and-ride at the train station (free bus to palaces)

Fuel Costs

  • Diesel: EUR 1.45-1.60/litre
  • Petrol: EUR 1.60-1.80/litre

Budget approximately EUR 60-80 for fuel on the complete Lisbon to Algarve trip (round trip) in a diesel compact.

Best Season

  • Spring (April-May): Wildflowers, pleasant temperatures (20-25Β°C), quiet beaches
  • Summer (June-August): Hot (30-38Β°C), busy beaches, highest prices, lively atmosphere
  • Autumn (September-October): Warm seas (warmest water of the year), fewer crowds, lower prices
  • Winter (November-March): Mild (15-18Β°C), great for hiking and golf, many beach restaurants closed
